AREA / UNITS: 60,000sf / 55
This four-storey apartment building, bridging a commercial site and residential neighbourhood, boasts 55 apartment units. The 60,000 ft2 building also houses office and clinic space for internal and external social and health programmes along with a large community room.
Completed in early 2011, the $8.1 million project incorporates an extensive array of ‘green’ design features selected to produce an extremely energy efficient structure with exceptionally low annual operating costs. Conventional heating and cooling energy demand is reduced through the use of passive solar heating and convective cooling. Municipal water consumption is similarly reduced through the use of rainwater and ground water collection and recycling. Domestic water heating employs on-demand heating units combined with wastewater heat recovery pre-heating. High efficiency lighting and controls provide reduced electrical consumption throughout the building.
