Grinham Architects was engaged to design a 2-storey, 15,600sf mixed-use facility, utilizing shipping containers as the primary structural and exterior cladding element.  The initial exercise involved an in-depth investigation into standardized shipping container designs and their adaptability to commercial building construction.  Once the optimal range of standardized container sizing was established the next step was to create numerous design options that accommodated the owner’s list of requirements, including leasable floor area, while keeping the number of shipping containers utilized in the project at a minimum.  The final design resulted in the use of shipping containers for a 2-storey, 7,400sf retail space, arranged to frame an outdoor courtyard around a conventionally designed 8,200sf daycare facility.
